What are some safety concerns that I should be aware of when my family is exploring natural hot springs or geothermal areas in nature?

Hi all,

My family and I are planning a trip to explore natural hot springs and geothermal areas in nature. We're very excited about this adventure but we want to make sure we're aware of any safety concerns that we should be mindful of. We are not very experienced with these kinds of environments so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi there!

I've had a lot of experience exploring natural hot springs and geothermal areas in nature, so I'm happy to share some safety tips with you.

First and foremost, it's important to recognize that the water in these areas can be very hot - sometimes even reaching boiling temperatures! So, it's crucial to test the temperature before entering any pools or streams. You can do this by dipping your toe in or using a thermometer if you have one.

It's also important to be aware of any warning signs or guidelines at the hot springs. Many places have regulations in place to protect both visitors and the environment, so be sure to follow them.

Another safety concern is free-floating bacteria in the hot springs. It's a good idea to avoid drinking the water or getting it in your mouth, nose, or eyes. Additionally, if you have any open wounds or sores, it's best to stay out of the water entirely as it can increase the risk of infection.

Lastly, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards. This includes slippery rocks, unstable ground, and strong currents. It's always a good idea to wear appropriate footwear and keep a sturdy walking stick handy.

Hope that helps! Have a safe and enjoyable trip.
